Using CompPile’s custom search – an instructional video for research writing students

Teaching through and in the wake of the pandemic allowed me to develop proficiency with many distance-learning technologies, including scripted digital video development and delivery.

In the following video, I used screenshare technology to demonstrate for research writing students how to locate articles using the Custom search field on CompPile, a Writing Studies research database. My presentation follows a loose script; after establishing context (several students emailed to say they were having trouble finding sources using the database), I walk students through the specified search feature using a topic and keywords that were related to the themes explored more generally in the course. My demonstration is brief and purposeful; the video clocks in at under 3 minutes 30 seconds. I end things with a summing-up, encouragement, and a call to action.
